Professional Background
|
Executive Vice-President, Ministry Mentors, 2008-Present Pastor,
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Glenview, Illinois 1996-2008
(Evangelical Lutheran Church in America)
Rostered Clergy Member Metropolitan
Chicago Synod
Since 1996 Holy Trinity slowly moved from an older declining congregation to one
attracting and assimilating newer, younger families. By introducing blended
worship, a small group ministry, and by integrating healthy Family Systems principles,
the congregation began to belief in itself once again.
Senior Pastor,
Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1989-1996
Associate Pastor, 1987-1989
Elgin, IL (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America)
With a staff of 11 full or part-time workers Bethlehem worshiped 300+ per
weekend. A Child Development Center was established, a successful
contemporary worship experience was launched, and a $600,000+ Endowment Fund
was received, developed, and monitored. Over 200 new members joined
during this time.
Pastoral Director/Counselor Wholistic Health Center 1976-1987 (Mendota,
Illinois)
Joined one of the initial attempts of combining
the physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual dimensions of life
in the practice of “whole person health care.” Envisioned by Dr. Granger
Westberg and implemented by Dr. Donald Tubesing et al, Wholistic Health Centers
were staffed by Family Practice physicians, registered nurses, office personnel
and pastoral counselors working in clinics built in church buildings.
When treating the whole person became more normative within medical circles in
the 1980’s, this visionary effort became the foundation of the Parish Nurse
program now growing in many churches across denominational lines. As
pastoral counselor/director established the Center in Mendota in 1976, and in
1986 assisted in transitioning the Center to become the Crossroads Counseling
Center of Mendota which is affiliated with Lutheran Social Services of Illinois
and continues to serve people today.
Chaplain/Supervisor in Training Clinical Pastoral Education Program 1974-1976 (St.
Luke’s Hospital, Milwaukee Wisconsin)
Completed 8 units of Clinical Pastoral Education
in a 500 bed acute care hospital on the south side of Milwaukee. In
addition to over 700 hours of extensive group work and individual supervision
with three different CPE supervisors, also served as floor and “on call”
chaplain for the hospital. As floor chaplain served for 3 month on the
closed door psychiatric unit and for 15 months on the heart surgery unit. The
“on call” responsibilities, which averaged 3-4 incidents per night, were shared
with other staff chaplains, each serving approximately one night per week.
Pastor, Zion Lutheran Church 1972-1974 Ashland, Wisconsin
(Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod)
Since this Missouri Synod congregation was
predominantly on the conservative side of the eventual split in the Missouri
Synod and I was in open sympathy and support with the professors who walked out
and established the Seminary-in-Exile in 1973, I experienced ministry in a
deeply conflicted situation. After attempts to resolve the conflict
served only to deepen the hurts, I, in consultation with District officials and
with their support, resigned from this parish. A painful, life defining
experience.
Pastor, Immanuel
Lutheran Church 1968-1972 Nipigon, Ontario, Canada (Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod)
Served as the second resident pastor of this
predominately Finnish mission congregation on Lake Superior’s north shore. We
worshiped 60-70 per weekend and I was also responsible for a preaching station
in the Scriber/Terrace Bay area 70 miles to the east serving 6-10 families, and
for 2 years was the interim pastor for a congregation in Manitouwadge, Ontario
186 miles from Nipigon which worshiped 25. I learned to minister
effectively in small groups--where “two or three are gathered.”
