Professional Background:
|
President and Founder, Ministry Mentors, 2000-Present
Researched,
organized and developed an organization to provide mentoring services for
pastors, utilizing exceptionally qualified active and retired clergy, serving
all denominations. Conducted fundraising and recruited leadership and training
resources.
Pastor Emeritus, Lutheran Church of the Ascension, 2001-Present
(Northfield, Illinois)
Senior Pastor, Lutheran Church of the Ascension, 1970-2000
(Evangelical Lutheran Church in America -- Northfield, IL)
Led Ascension Church through all four of the classic stages of church growth. During
thirty years as senior pastor, from 1970 to 2000, Ascension achieved the remarkable
distinction of experiencing growth in all areas of ministry while typical mainline
congregations in the area suffered membership and program decline or stagnation.
During this time, Ascension's membership grew from a 300-plus member congregation in
1970 to over 900 in 2000, becoming one of the strongest congregations in the
North Shore area of Chicago.
Ascension's staff grew from 4 to 18, equipping the congregation's
programs and ministries through worship, pastoral care, education, children and
family programs, music, youth, health, fellowship and service to those in
need. The congregation developed an
ability to relate to all types of persons, transcending differences in age,
race, religious background, educational achievement and economic status.
During thirty years of service, led the congregation in two major building programs,
tripling the size of the physical facility; remodeling and re-lighting of the
chancel area and enhancing the Celebration of Life Gardens. Because of interest in
art and architecture, worked closely with architects in both the design and building phases,
stressing the value of symbolism as well as multi-purpose practicality.
The 2000 budget of almost $800,000 with over $200,000 in support of ministries and needs
beyond local programming put Ascension into the top one percent of its national
denomination. Equally impressive is the
number of members who offer service and leadership to causes that enhance
social service, education and health concerns on a community, nation and
worldwide basis.
Encouraged Ascension to adopt or create programs that reach a wide area of interests,
striving for excellence in all aspects of ministry. Ascension was in the first group
of congregations to enter into the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago's Teaching
Parish program, as well as their first Doctor of Ministry program.
Tentmakers, Inc., a national youth ministry training program, received
personal encouragement and the recommendation of key personnel to help launch
its successful ministry. Spiritual
mentoring led a lay leader into developing worldwide support for Bible
translating, including the production of three award winning
documentaries. In 1980, traveled around
the world to support Bible translation work, visiting remote sections of
Australia, Papua New Guinea, Kenya, Cameroon and the Ivory Coast.
Trained lay
members to become Stephen Ministers. Helped introduce Health Ministry program
using medically-trained staff member to guide program.
Associate Pastor, St. John's Lutheran Church, 1964-1970
(Lutheran Church in America -- Bloomington, Illinois)
First associate pastor in congregation's history. Worked closely with Pastor Harold
Skillrud in helping congregation grow from 900 to 1,700 members and more than doubling
the size of the physical facilities. Strengthened ministry to
students and faculty at Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan
University. Trained Bethel Bible Series
leaders during two-year course. Organized church group tour of the Holy Land,
Greece, Italy and Egypt.
