Dr. Donald H. Fagerberg

I met Don Fagerberg briefly one Sunday in 1976. Six months later, on meeting him a second time, he not only remembered my name, my wife’s name but also were we lived! That first impression of Don Fagerberg was therefore ‘mind like a steel trap.’ After that, we quickly joined Ascension Church. In getting to know Don over the years, I have come to know him as a tremendously successful parish minister, counselor, and friend. Don has a tremendous emotional intelligence, which truly permits him to empathize with all people in nearly all circumstances and give good and wise counsel which comes from his mind but which is offered from his heart.

An extraordinary listener and ‘comforter’ able to bond emotionally with the situation at hand. He can uniquely call upon a very wide range of personal and professional experiences including personal and professional crises that give him unique insight as a mentor and counselor. In this regard, he has the innate skills to ‘feel’ the need of those he is mentoring and advising.

Having known Don Fagerberg for many years as pastor, friend and mentor has, indeed, been both a blessing and a joy. He has been gifted with a rare combination of fine intellect and a deep, abiding compassion for people. Many, myself included, have been the recipients of all he so generously offers; he embodies true goodness, integrity, commitment to his beliefs and values, as well as unfailing energy and accessibility. Don’s vision for Ministry Mentors will be both a perfect extension and exciting opportunity for him to continue the use of his natural strengths, interests and vast repertoire of experiences.

I have known Pastor Don Fagerberg for ten years, and his original appeal was his thoughtful sermons and his ability to connect with the congregation. His essence was always giving a perspective on life and how important it is to reflect on one’s current situation, and the importance of giving and family. Don always operated at the highest level of integrity and ethics and would reach out for the congregation, having a unique ability to recognize their needs.

His leadership style is very pastoral. I have suggested to many friends and family during troubled times to talk with Don. Don has been my mentor and counselor.

As Pastor at the Lutheran Church of the Ascension we have seen, first hand, the skills necessary to generate the success we have achieved at our church over the past three decades. Don Fagerberg’s intelligence, compassion and spirituality have served us all very well. As a friend and advisor he has had an indelible impact on our entire family.

Don’s ability to make you feel at ease and bring the basic concept of religious teachings to you is unsurpassed in my experience with many ministers over six decades. His sermons are excellent with an understandable message. He has also been involved in programs that reach out to the less advantaged, for example through CityQuest where he serves as Chairman of the Board. As a Pastor he has been a mentor to many across all age groups in religious, family, personal, and job related matters.
